The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has set plans to issue standards for food safety and environmental protection in a bid to prepare Thailand for the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).
Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Cooperatives Supatra Thanaseniwat said after an AEC workshop at Government House on Thursday that there would be assessments of impacts from the AEC on Thai agricultural products, such as rice and fruits. Despite the country’s high standards for produce exports, she pointed out that Thailand still needed to have standards for food safety and environmental conservation to prevent future problems in the export sector.
During the workshop, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra assigned the ministries in the economic group, which includes the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, to meet and discuss Thailand’s advantages in terms of economy and improvements for entering the AEC. The meeting’s conclusions will be submitted to the premier in the next AEC workshop.
